BioTherapeutics Commitment to the PI Community

Ludwig Hantson

Ludwig Hantson
Baxter Corporate Vice President, President−BioScience

“BioTherapeutics has a long history of commitment to the primary immunodeficiency (PI) community. Each year the level of investment has been increasing to help build greater awareness, improve diagnosis, and optimize treatment for PI. From the products we make to the programs we support, our aim is to provide the PI community the highest level of support to advance patient care globally and enable the achievement of outcomes through innovation, science, and technology.”

BioTherapeutics supports a number of patient and industry organizations that help the patient communities we serve, including finding a cure. Our goal is to help advance research, increase awareness, and increase diagnosis rates in primary immunodeficiency (PI), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) and other conditions to achieve better treatment outcomes.

BioTherapeutics works together with these various organizations to position PI as a public health priority. We are a member of the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA), a key industry group supporting plasma-based therapies. The PPTA works with patient groups, policymakers, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to address critical issues that impact the industry and patients.

Public Policy/Access

Baxter's Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) teams work with lawmakers, governments, and policymakers around the globe to support patient access to Baxter's therapies, increase understanding of the benefits of those therapies, and address barriers to care and explore possible solutions. This includes working directly with governments to improve the regulatory environment and reimbursement structure for Baxter's therapies. Baxter also collaborates with, clinicians, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and patient groups on other coordinated efforts to increase access to care for millions of patients around the world.

US GAPP partners with our key stakeholders to educate US public policymakers on the need for screening and testing of diseases such as PIs and AATD, ensure reimbursement policies allow for access to plasma-based therapies in the appropriate therapeutic setting, and protect patients' ability to work with their physician in selecting the optimal therapy for their medical needs.
